The Importance of the Sun

What is commonly referred to as your zodiac sign should be more correctly called your “Sun” sign. When someone asks you what sign you are, they are really asking you ‘What is your sun sign?’

The sun sign is usually described as a list of attributes or characteristics. However, the basic motivation of the sun is rarely given attention. The Sun has its own purpose. The way that this purpose is carried out is determined by your Sun Sign. But what does the sun want to accomplish? What does it really want?

Just as the sun is the source of all light, energy and life in our solar system, the sun in your astrological chart is the source of all of your energy, health and vitality. The sun represents your fundamental life force. The sun is our vitality; when the sun is strong and well cared for, we are full of strength and energy. When we do not feed our suns, we go weak, lethargic and depressed. The sun is our conscious sense of self, of who we are as an individual.

However, we do not automatically express our suns. When a horoscope says that a Leo is confident or a Libra is balanced, it is really speaking of the potential of that sign. We have to earn our sun sign. We do this by making conscious choices, by pursuing activities and experiences that enhance our sense of individuality, and that express our personal creative forces. When we are expressing our sun sign, we are not aware of anything but the present moment; we are focused and centered because all of our energy is directed at being who we truly are, as best as we possibly can.

Astrologically, the sun shows where and how we want to be a star. The sun represents the way we want to be known, the things we want to express and be recognized for. The sun wants to have influence, and it always seeks greater and greater expressions.
